Why Your Dog Doesn't Behave – and What to Do About It

Even though dogs have been domesticated and don't necessarily need the instincts they used when roaming in the wild, they still do have those natural instincts. You can either choose to ignore them and treat your dog like a human, or you can learn your dog's natural 'language' and use it to build a stronger relationship with them while also solving any behavior problem they may have.
This is important to know when it comes to training your dog, because your goal is to become the pack leader. Most behavior problems come about when a dog believes they are the alpha dog, and you are beneath them. When a dog believes he/she is the pack leader, they will growl, bite, ignore your commands, and so on. This isn't because they are a 'bad' dog, it is because they believe themselves to be the leader, based on the way you have communicated with them.
How do you become the pack leader so your dog will obey you? It's actually quite simple.
a) Never let your dog eat before you, or at the same time as you are. The alpha dog always gets to eat first. The alpha dog also does not share food, so never give your dog any table scraps. Not only is it bad for their health, it's sending them the wrong message.
b) This next one may be difficult for some of you, but if you really want your dog's bad behavior to stop you'll do this one too. Don't let your dog sleep on your bed with you. Your dog needs to be above theirs. They must not sleep on the same level with you.
c) Before giving your dog any food, water, or affection, make them sit or lay down first. The reason for doing this is to show your dog that you are the provider of these things, and you will give it to them when you decide, not when they request it.
d) Don't be fooled into thinking your dog is trying to be loving when he/she swats you with their paw or puts their head on your lap to get you to pet them. This is their way of demanding you give them affection. Do not give in. Wait until they stop doing it, and then pet them. Or better yet, tell them to sit down or lay down, then pet them.
e) Last, don't let your dog walk through doorways before you. You should always pass through before them. If they run ahead of you and you can't stop them, use a leash to pull them back while you walk through first.
It may be difficult, and maybe even a little strange at first to follow these tips, especially if you're currently doing the opposite of the advice given here. However, stick through it and you will see an improvement in your dog's behavior. It will also improve the relationship with your dog because dogs respect and love their pack leader. I hope this advice helps you and I wish you well.
